When I went full time with my online business in 2003 I bought some good hosting thinking I could service all my customers and while I had only a small number all was good.

My products started to sell quite well and suddenly customers were complaining that they could not access the support videos etc. which I created to lower support queries. What happens with most standard hosting you purchase is it is good for a number of users as long as they do not try and access your site at the same time.

The solution is called a CDN. Content Distribution Network.

The Wikipedia entry for CDN states: “A content delivery network or content distribution network (CDN) is a large distributed system of servers deployed in multiple data centers across the Internet. The goal of a CDN is to serve content to end-users with high availability and high performance.

Basically you upload your files to a cdn like Amazon S3 and then embed the links in your website and it will scale automatically to any customer load. Alternatively you can use a plugin that will upload all your files as they are created.

We use the most common CDN called Amazon S3 Storage. We started with just a few files and now have over 1000 videos and hundreds of graphics and other files. It is a very cheap and reliable storage system.

On top of all this you can also use it to backup your computer. If you want to do it all manually we use a program called S3 Browser.

These videos are a little old however the basics are still the same and I refer back to them every now and then.
