Most businesses we approach use Windows and PCs in their business mainly because of price and software so the major part of this part of the course is based around Windows.

This is for your protection just in case something goes wrong – I do this for all IT clients on every site visit – it’s a good habit to get into.

Start Here – First Make a Restore Point

Live Scan Your PC for Crypto, Goz, QBot & Other Malware

f-secure

F-Secure is currently our preferred live malware scanner as it’s fast, free, it doesn’t flag up false positives + it checks for other nasties too. F-Secure doesn’t install anything on your PC or change any admin rights – you will be asked to run an exe file – this is a stand alone app.

Run Windows Updates & Check Updates are Set to Automatic

If you’re on Vista,7,8,8.1 run ‘windows update’ you’ll find this in your control panel or by searching for ‘windows update’ in your search box (above the start buttom in windows 7 or move mouse to top right corner in Windows 8 apps screen)

Windows 7 & Vista Users – Go to Control Panel

Advisory: Use These Sites To Check Suspect Links
If you are not sure if the link is Legitimate – Check it

Hackers & Scammers like to point links to infected sites & often mimic banks, government institutions & tax offices etc. They often include the establishment name in the URL and add some sense of false urgency to persuade you to open the link. Here’s how to check if the link is real:

If you’re not sure about opening a link in an email/website simply right click the link or button & in the drop down menu:
click “copy link Location” in Firefox

or click “copy shortcut” in Internet Explorer

or click “copy link address” in Chrome

Paste the link into trust & reputation checking sites:

1. Trust Check any link with: www.scamadviser.com

This site will tell you whether the site is a known scammer – more importantly if you’ve received an email claiming it’s from iTunes for example and the link text says bobbuilder.com even if Scamadviser passes the site – it’s obviously a hacked site as the link doesn’t come from the sender – check all the links you suspect before clicking this way

2. Reputation Check any link with: www.urlvoid.com

These sites will tell you if the site is trusted or not based on live infornation from authority domains. We recommend you bookmark these sites.
